Notes on missing data

General: Missing Timesteps: Some files are missing timesteps. This happens for various reasons; it may be impossible for the RCM to run the final day before the GCM data cuts off, for example, or there may have been problems with storage space during the run that caused the data from some timesteps to fail to write to disk. We have done our best to ensure that any known gaps in the data during the official coverage periods have been filled with missing_data. If you find a file with a gap in the time coordinate, let us know and we will fix it. We have tabulated the known timesteps where all values are missing here.

General: CCSM-driven runs end in 1999: The driving data from the CCSM historical run ends one year short of the NARCCAP coverage period, at the end of 1999 instead of on 2000/12/31. All CCSM-current runs have only 29 years of valid data instead of 30.

CRCM husnp: The CRCM simulations calculated the surface humidity incorrectly, causing significantly excess values. This problem did not affect the simulation, but caused the huss output variable to be invalid. The variable husnp, the value of the 3-D variable hus on the pressure level closest to the ground, has been provided instead. Compared to huss, husnp will probably run a little low, and will be largely missing any diurnal cycle because it is not closely coupled to the surface. The corresponding 3-D temperature is included in husnp files as the variable tanp.

ECP2 spdmax, mrfso, cli, clw, and wa: These variables are not available from this model.

ECP2-gfdl-current clt: Cloud cover is not available for the gfdl-current run.

ECP2 Table 5: Due to post-processing limitations, the 3-D variables from ECP2 are provided on hybrid-sigma levels, not split into pressure levels; they have also not been divided up temporally. As a result, there is only one file per variable. No 3-D data is available for the HadCM3-driven runs.

ECP2-gfdl-current hus: Due to post-processing limitations, hus for this run is not available for the last 20 months of the run. (Data ends April 5, 1999.)

HRM3-hadcm3 missing values: There are occasional, isolated missing_values (typically no more than 1 per file) scattered throughout these files. They replace 'glitch' values we found during QC that we believe were due to hardware errors associated with data transfer.

HRM3 winds: Wind variables (spdmax, uas, vas, ua, va) from HRM3 have been output on a staggered grid, which is offset by half a gridcell relative to the grid used for all the other variables. We plan to interpolate the results to the standard grid for surface variables, but not for the 3-D (Table 5) data.

HRM3-ncep sic: Sea ice is not available for the NCEP-driven run of HRM3.

HRM3-hadcm3 mrro 2056: Data is not properly masked over the oceans in this file; use caution.

HRM3-gfdl swe: Snow-water-equivalent was not saved for the gfdl-driven runs of HRM3, and is unavailable.

HRM3 tauu and tauv: The tauu and tauv variables are not available for the ncep- and hadcm3-driven runs of HRM3.

HRM3 cli and clw: Cloud ice and cloud water are provided on hybrid-sigma levels, not split into pressure levels, due to difficulties with vertical interpolation. As a result, the number of files is significantly smaller. In addition, some files are missing from the hadcm3-driven runs.

HRM3-hadcm3 wa: This variable is not available for the hadcm3-future run.

HRM3 zg: This variable was not calculated for the HRM3 runs.

MM5I Table 5: There is no data on the 1025- and 1050-mb pressure levels for this model.

RCM3 sic, mrfso, prw: These variables do not exist or are not valid fo this model.

RCM3 other missing data: These files are not available for this model.

WRFG-ncep starts late: The NCEP-driven WRFG run begins 1979-09-01, not 1979-01-01. This is an error that results in a shortened spin-up period, but is expected to have minimal effect on variables except those closely tied to soil moisture.

Missing WRFG-ccsm longwave radiation: Some of the longwave radiation variables for the CCSM-driven WRFG runs have extensive gaps or are missing entirely. This is a data problem, not a model problem: the outputs were not saved correctly, but the values were correct within the model while it was running.

WRFG tauu and tauv: These variables are not available for this model.

WRFG-cgcm3 future Table 3 gaps: Currently, every fifth year of data is missing from the Table 3 variables in the WRFG-cgcm3 future run. The WRFG modeling team has been contacted about filling in these gaps, but we do not have an ETA for the fix at this time.

WRFG-ccsm Table 5: The 50-mb pressure level is not calculable for this model, and has been omitted.

TMSL-ccsm: The current-period CAM3 timeslice run only covers 20 years, from 1980-1999 (not including the spin-up year of 1979). The future-period CAM3 timeslice covers 30 years, from 2040-2069, with no spin-up.

TMSL-ccsm missing variables: A number of variables are unavailable from this model because they were missing from the model output files.

TMSL-gfdl mrro, mrros: No data is available for these variables because runoff values were not correctly computed in the 50km model.

TMSL-gfdl mrfso, rootd: No data is available for these variables, because there are no variables in the model that correspond directly.

TMSL-gfdl mrso, snm, swe: Data from the spin-up period (1968-1970) is not available for these variables.

TMSL-gfdl all 3-D variables: 3-D data from the GFDL timeslice is on native pressure levels, not interpolated to 25-mb heights. Also, each file contains one month of data rather than 5 years.

TMSL-gfdl cli, clw: No data is available for these variables. They were not saved because the storage requirements proved prohibitive.

TMSL-gfdl wap: The vertical wind component diagnostic variable (wa) is not available for this model. The vertical velocity in pressure coordinates (wap, units Pa/sec) is provided instead.

TMSL-gfdl zg: This variable is not available for this model.
